The 1071m-long Story Bridge spans the Brisbane River between Kangaroo
Point
and Fortitude Valley. It opened on July 6, 1940 after just over five year's
construction and at a cost of 1.6 million pounds (at the time). It's highest
point
is 80m above the river. The bridge is a cantilever type, the design of
which
was overseen by the project's consulting engineer John Bradfield who
had
the same role on the Sydney Harbour Bridge project.
Guided tours now
give people the chance to climb the structure.
River cruises and
canoe trips
are great ways to see the
bridge from the water.
Michael Moy has written a comprehensive book about the bridge and
its
construction
called Story Bridge: idea to icon |
